Churches to visit in Tuscany near "Il Borgo"

The religious architecture in Casentino was developing about IV -VI centuries, in consequences of the new ways built for the trade. A lot of these churches "Pievi" were renovate during XII century and restyled in Romanesque. In order to this style, the aspect of the buildings is made so to emphasize the atmosphere of pray; also the material used for the construction is suitable for silence climate. The life inside the "Pievi" The IX century was the summit of the "pievi"; in fact in this period they increased and they became the nerve centre of the city. The priests not only leaded the people in a spiritual life but they also taught to the people to read and write; and usually this kind of church attended ill and poor people.

 The church of Santa Maria Assunta was built in the XII century over one previous church, there's a nave and two sides aisles with marvellous capitals, real museum of sacred art with works of Bicci di Lorenzo (1373-1452) opening: 7.00-19.00 S.Maria a Poppiena church, known since 1099, with the Annunciazione of Giovanni di Marco called Dal Ponte (1385-1437).

 The church of San Romolo a Valiana (1126) inside is conserved an oil-painting of La Pietà and the Passion and the saints Gregorio Longino painted by Master of Madonna Straus and datable at the end of XIV century and the beginning of XV S.Pietro a Romena church rises on a sacred building. Valuable example of Romanesque architecture of XII century with suggestive apse, and marvellous capitals. Opening on reservation 0575-58725.

 The church of Santa Maria Assunta in Cielo has a nave and two side aisles with apse in the centre. Remembered in the Bulls of 1103 the building has a similar structure like other churches of Casentino. Original is the disposition of the columns and the pillars that are plastered and fresco with subjects that were commissioned from the faithful. Today, of its frescoes remain only some traces, with the exception of that one of the Virgin. Notable the Mary with the baby attributed recently to Rossello di Jacopo Franchi (1377-1456) and the one terracotta with Mary and the baby, work of Benedetto Buglioni (1461-1521) OPENING: 7.30-19.00.

 San Martino a Vado (1028) is a church dedicated to S.Martino, bishop of Tours, is the only of the four-parish church, which still conserve the original façade. The column has Romanesque capitals with representation of humans and flowers. Inside there are frescos from the little church of Castel San Niccolò. The Crocifissione is a fresco of Florentine school in XIV century and it is very important for the technique of the work, which remembers Giotto's style.  Santa Maria a Buiano is a church, which its news goes back to the first years of the millennium. The church of today is just a third of the original one. Under the church there's a grave, with a double line of little column. This church was built under roman ruin, and it was found a wall probably from IV century b.c. Opening: for the visit it is necessary to ask to the near house. The church of Madonna del Morbo was built between 1657-1659 to thanks God for the escaped danger of plague around the years 1530 and 1631. Inside there's an oil painting which represent the Virgin with San Giovannino who hold the baby Jesus, attributable to Pier Francesco Fiorentino S.Maria Assunta (Badia Prataglia) was found, by benedictines monks, in X century. It has a marvellous crypt with a nave and two side aisles with round arch and cross vault. opening 8.00-12.00 - 15.00-19.00.

 The church of San Matteo (memmenano) that conserve a terracotta of Andrea della Robbia, a great altarpiece in white and blue that represent the Pentacost. Memmenano is a small village where you can admire arno's valley and the castle of Fronzola SS.Ippolito and Donato church erected in XII century over a church of Tarlati Castle, bishops of Arezzo, inside has a magnificent wood sculpture with Mary and the baby, work of Bicci di Lorenzo, painting of Ligozzi, work of Cola di Camerino and a notable crucifix made by Master San Paolo in Rosso.  S.Lorenzo church has two beautiful terracotta of Luca della Robbia the Young. S.Antonino Martire church is situated at Pieve a Socana (Castel Focognano ). The church was built over an ancient sacred area, unique testimony of an Etruscan altar, one time part of a temple; the altar is behind the apse of this church.
